Gray collection, ca. 1839-1976 (bulk 1839-1876).

Summary: The bulk of the collection is photocopies of materials tracing A.B. Gray's activities as surveyor of the Mexican Boundary and later for the Great American Southern Pacific Railway. There are publications about Gray, copies of correspondence regarding his appointment as surveyor, and an original letter from Minor Meriwether regarding Gray's death. There are pages from Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, 1855, that contain drawings of places along the railroad survey including Tumacacori, Babocomari, Calabasas, Altar, and Fort Yuma. There are printed reports by Andrew Gray and a bound copy of the U.S. Senate Mexican Boundary Reports, 1852-1853. One 1851 letter (photocopy only) was written by Gray to the Secretary of the Dept. of the Interior from Santa Rita del Cobre, N.M. Also present are original personal letters to Gray from his sister, Lina Gray. There are two photographs of Andrew Gray.

Biographical note: A.B. Gray was appointed surveyor to mark the boundary between the United States and Mexico after the Mexican War. He was later recalled over a dispute with John R. Bartlett, the U.S. Boundary Commissioner. Five years later he surveyed the 32nd parallel in search of a suitable railroad route for the Texas and Western Railroad. He served as a captain in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was killed by an accidental gunshot wound in 1862. From the descripti...
